At VIP Compass Travel, we are a husband and wife duo helping you arrange the best vacation plans with minimal stress. We were talking and realized something clients struggle with is their concern about how to stay fit on a cruise. Part of the initial appeal of traveling on a cruise ship is the maximum levels of relaxation it offers cruise-goers. Once you’re on board the ship, you can eat, drink, swim, sleep, and play games. While this can be appealing, you also don’t want to end your vacation with unintended weight gain. Here are some tips for staying fit on a cruise.
TAKE THE STAIRS
Cruise ships are ripe with stairs, even pre-COVID this is a great alternate option to elevators. Larger ships can have anywhere from 10 to 15 decks, that’s a lot of stairs to climb! Choose to walk to your room, restaurants, the pool and other cruise ship amenities. You will save yourself a lot of time by not waiting for the socially-distanced elevator rides, and you’ll be burning calories as you go.
USE THE CRUISE GYM
Well, this is an easy one. Cruise ships have gyms onboard for convenience. Locate your ship’s gym and check it out. You could go for a jog, lift some weights, even stretch all with the view of the ocean. If that’s not a workout incentive, I don’t know what is.
JOGGING TRACK
In addition to the gym, most cruise ships have a built in jogging track located on the upper deck. This is a great way to take some laps with some fresh air or clock some miles outdoors while being out at sea. Set a small goal like jogging 1.5 miles a day before dinner to get your heart pumping and have less guilt when you enjoy your meals.
FITNESS CLASS
If the thought of jogging on a treadmill or up on deck sounds boring, check out your ships fitness class options. Many ships will offer a variety of fun classes for cruise-goers ranging from yoga and pilates to dance. Spice up your trip and sign up for one with your cruise companion to get a little motion on the ocean and learn something new while you’re at it.
PORTION CONTROL
This can be challenging, even more so when you’re on vacation and willingly allowing yourself to enjoy more food and drink than usual. It’s also difficult when you’re on a ship surrounded with constant, amazing food. However, if you’re trying to minimize vacation weight gain, be mindful. You don’t have to go full out and track your calories, but be intentional with how many times a day you are eating and how much. Limiting treats can also make them more enjoyable.
The best way to stay fit on a cruise is to get a little movement into each day and be aware of how much and how often you are consuming food and alcohol. With a little intention, your trip can be equal parts relaxation and moderation. Reach out to us at VIP Compass to book your next cruise today.
